Polokwane gogo shares Mandela Day kindness

At 85, Raisibe Maja will spend her Mandela Day helping at church and donating clothes, saying small acts of kindness can build a better country.

POLOKWANE – Raisibe Maja (85) says she will spend her 67 minutes for Mandela Day helping at her church and donating her grandchildren’s old clothes to people in need.

Born and raised in a village outside Polokwane, Maja said July 18 reminds her of the spirit of ubuntu and the importance of helping others.

“I have lived here all my life and have seen many changes over the years,” she said.

A life of responsibility

As the first and only daughter in her family, Maja said she carried great responsibility from a young age.

“My parents worked on a farm in Polokwane, and as the eldest child I had to take care of my siblings. It was a difficult responsibility because I was still young myself,” she said.

Maja believes Mandela Day is a reminder that everyone has the ability to make a difference through acts of service, no matter how small.

“It doesn’t always have to be something big. Even giving your time, helping an elderly neighbour or feeding someone who is hungry can change a person’s life,” she said.

Reflecting on her childhood, Maja said many families struggled to survive, making compassion and generosity even more important.

“Many families struggled to make ends meet. We worked hard every day just to survive, so we understand how important it is to help other people,” she said.

She encouraged young people to give back to their communities.

“Small acts of kindness can help build a better South Africa for everyone,” she said.
