Family member arrested for arson after fire destroys R1.5m home in Rooival
The homeowner was in Seshego when his sister called to say their homestead was ablaze, but by the time he reached home, both buildings were gone.
MOKOPANE – A 22-year-old man has been arrested for arson after a fire destroyed property worth an estimated R1.5m at a homestead in Rooival village.
Mahwelereng police, under the Waterberg district, said the homeowner was in Seshego on July 24 when his younger sister called to tell him their homestead was on fire.
Fire and emergency personnel from Mokopane were called to extinguish the blaze.
The homeowner rushed home and arrived at about 23:00 to find the ten-roomed house and a three-roomed back house completely burned down, along with everything inside.
Suspect allegedly identified by neighbour
Police said preliminary investigations indicated the suspect is the homeowner’s nephew, and that he was allegedly seen at the scene by a neighbour.
Community members who tried to put out the fire were allegedly confronted by the suspect, who fought with them before fleeing on foot, police said.
An arson case was opened and a search launched, leading to the suspect’s arrest in Rooival village.
He is expected to appear in the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court today (July 27), on a charge of arson.
Police investigations continue.
