I’d like to believe the issue of New Year’s resolutions is not only a burning issue in South Africa, but all over the world.
I am very sure that everybody reading this has, at some stage in their lives, set a number of resolutions and the greater majority still have not reached their resolutions.
If you feel that you are not making progress in that department, allow me to assure you that you are not alone. The problem is that people find too much comfort in that they are not the only ones failing to reach their resolutions, and end up never even bothering to try again.
The reason many of us set resolutions is that resolutions give us a renewed sense of living. The hope of a better life fuels our passion to try and accomplish our resolutions every year.
Those who have lost hope, lost it because they put a lot of effort into achieving their resolutions, however not a lot seems to change in their lives and they ask themselves why they should waste their time. This is a very dangerous place to be, because it makes people lose their purpose in life.
If we really want progress then we need to have a burning desire to do something about it and start to look at our lives in a different way. We have to stop relying on other people to take us to where we want to go.
Making a resolution is making a new decision altogether. By saying that this is how things are going to be from now on, it cuts out any other possibilities except those that lead to success.
In my book I refer to this as: “If you want the island then burn the boats”. If there is no turning back and you are committed, then you will certainly find a way to make things work.
