I have had similar experiences as those reported in the Review of February 6-7.
On December 5 last year, I collected business associates from O.R. Tambo International Airport.
When I next used Gauteng’s highways, it was December 27, taking my family to the coast on holiday.
Within minutes of passing under the first gantry, I was sent what I believe to be a rude SMS threatening that I was to be “handed over” if I didn’t pay the R173,88.
R173,88 to drive to O.R. Tambo once!
I thought they said these things would be a couple of cents each, never amounting to more than a few rand per day?
When we got home from our holiday, there was the “rude” letter in the postbox and then, a few days later, the account arrived.
I called the number on it to query the amount and the person on the other end was completely incapable of conversation, merely grunting that the amount was correct.
I have yet to receive any account or threat for the holiday trip.
I have not paid anything to date and don’t intend to.
How can they rob me – literally – when I need to get to our nearest functional international airport?
