POLOKWANE – This year will be the first Mandela Day the country will celebrate without Nelson Mandela. But that does not mean the legacy of Mandela Day is over.
Nelson Mandela International Day, better known as Mandela Day, is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated every year on July 18, which is Mandela’s birthday.
The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on July 18, 2010. However, other groups began celebrating Mandela Day in 2009 before the day was declared officially.
Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact. It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy.
It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
The country will celebrate Mandela Day tomorrow (Friday) in honour of Mandela.
Review spoke to Mickey and Minnie Pre-school learners to find out if they knew who Nelson Mandela was, what Mandela Day meant and what they would be doing for Mandela Day.
Hilda-Jane Wiggil said Nelson Mandela was our president, and on Mandela Day, everyone must pray for the well-being of people in general.
“He was old and very sick, and I am also going to be praying for those in need on Mandela Day.”
Chumani Tengani said: “Mandela was the president of South Africa. On Mandela Day, people do not go to work, they go and help poor people. I will be at school on Mandela Day”.
Dakalo Shotheli said Nelson Mandela was the president of the country. “We must pray for the good of this country. On Mandela Day, I will be praying for him and his legacy.”
Mikyla Tengani said: “On Mandela Day, people are going to clean the streets and my mom says they are going to donate clothes to children who do not have clothes.
“I am going to help our teacher clean our school on Mandela Day”.
Zwoluga Muthige said Nelson Mandela was a good president and that the whole world must pray for a better world. He said he would be at school on Mandela Day.
Khutso Komane said: “Nelson Mandela was the president of the country. And on Mandela Day we must all pray for Mandela’s legacy”.
Rotondwa Sikhauli said: “Nelson Mandela is sitting on a very big chair in heaven and on Mandela Day, he is going to stand up and come visit us for a day because we will be celebrating his birthday”.
