Political parties are manmade and they cannot exist without the support and loyalty of all their members

Elvis Masoga, political analyst

POLITICAL structures are an innate manifestation of collective human thinking and perpetual action.

The “theory of social contract” argues that politics is an enterprise that is driven by the will of the people. Political parties derive their existence from the ensuing loyalty of their members. Political parties can never exist without the support and loyalty of its members.

Political organisations are manmade, and as a result, their existence is not pre-destined. One can never predict the collapse or the sustenance of an existing political party. It is also not possible to be able to predict the fortunes or misfortunes of an existing party.

Could the ANC lose political power in the country? The ANC is evidently not on the verge of losing political power.

The country’s opposition parties are not technically capable of dethroning the ruling party. It is only the ANC members and supporters that can practically remove the ruling party from power.

It is rumoured that a coalition of opposition parties will dislodge the ANC from power in the 2019 elections. This assertion is mostly informed by wishful thinking rather than empirical practicality. Our opposition parties are not yet ready to govern the country. Opposition parties lack structural capacity to can manage a stable government.

For example, all opposition parties do not have any “ready-to-govern” political framework. These parties are structurally disorganised and politically incoherent.

Our opposition parties have dismally failed to offer an alternative vision for our country. The DA is only interested in being a stronger opposition party. The DA derives its strength from the demise of other smaller parties. The DA has become a political python that survives on swallowing up smaller parties. It has failed to penetrate the historical support base of the ANC.

Opposition parties must stop complaining about the ANC and begin to offer a new vision. The ANC has been voted into power by its members and supporters.

In addition, it is only the members and supporters of the ANC that can remove the party from power.

Our opposition parties are not structurally fit and technically capable of dislodging the ANC from government.
