POLOKWANE – Building a tactical physique by using a functional strength and conditioning workout, in other words building a body that performs as good as it looks, is one of the main goals at Polokwane’s Body Life gym.
“Over the years we have improved our facilities and staff members to a point where we can really say we are in the business of functional strength training. I have seen many ‘big guys’ over the years training in our facilities without any muscle or physical capacity,” says David van Ryneveld, owner of Body Life Polokwane.
“They might have muscle volume but this volume is of no use when it comes to functional movements,” explains David.
This is where the tactical physique comes in, bridging the gap between the functional, practical performance based body workouts and the physique, which is more about aesthetics, looks and nice biceps.
This can be done by focusing on the functional side of training and letting the physique benefit in the meantime.
“This starts with a change of mindset and starting to focus on whole body functionality and what your body is capable of when all the individual parts start working together like a well oiled machine. Your body is one whole unit not separate little pieces loosely strung together,” says David.
A new set of training variables that includes training days focused on strength, hypertrophy, muscle endurance, power, cardiovascular endurance, speed and agility and a range of motion and stretching have to be incorporated into the perfect tactical physique workout.
