Breast themography is a completely non-invasive imaging method that can pick up changes in the breast, which may indicate early stage breast disease.

An infrared camera is used to capture a thermal picture of the body and convert it into a digital colour image on a PC monitor which can then be analysed on screen.

Thermography’s clinical value is its high sensitivity to developing pathology in the breast and testes, and as such, contributes to the diagnosis made by the practitioner.

This test improves the chances of detecting fast-growing active tumours in the intervals between mammographic screenings or when mammography is not indicated.

All clients’ thermograms (breast images) are kept on record and form a baseline for all future routine evaluations.

Breast themography can detect the subtle physiological changes that accompany breast pathology e.g. cancer, fibrocystic disease or an infection.

Your doctor can then do further diagnostic testing if necessary and or monitor you during and after any treatment.

Thermography does not replace a mammogram, but can pick up early signs of potential pathology by detecting vascular, lymphatic and structural changes in the breast.

Breast themography is ideally used in conjunction with mammogram as part of routine screening.

Thermography differs used in conjunction with mammograms as part of routine screening. Thermography differs from mammograms in that it looks at physiological changes, whereas as mammogram primarily detects structural changes.

The two methods are complementary.

All women can benefit from thermography and it is particularly beneficial in women under 50 in that they have denser breast tissue, making it difficult for mammograms to pick up suspicious lesions. Thermography can pinpoint areas that need closer examination.

As breast cancer grows significantly faster in younger women, early detection is of utmost importance. If breast cancer is detected early, there are treatment choices, and with prompt treatment the outlook is excellent.

Benefits of thermography:

• Non-invasive, no radiation and pain free.

• No contact early detection.

Thermography’s role in breast cancer and other breast disorders is to help in early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology and the establishment of risk factor for the development or existence of cancer.

When used with other procedures, the best possible evaluation of breast health is made.

On Friday, March 6, a doctor from Johannesburg will be available to do this test in Polokwane for women and one for the men on Saturday.
