We don’t know why the two-day-old piglet was abandoned by the sow, but she had concentrated on feeding the rest of her litter. The sows make a nest in the veld, cover themselves with grass and bond with their piglets over the first two days. Each piglet has its own teat which they butt and pummel while feeding – but only when the sow makes a sing-song grunting noise. We decided to try to hand-raise the “orphan”. There was an adequate hole in the teat of the feeding bottle and we tried cows’ milk. In spite of our efforts the piglet did not take it. Then with the help of advice via Google we added cod liver oil and egg yolk to the milk. Even then the piglet failed to drink enough to keep it alive. Our attempts to sing like a lactating sow didn’t seem to assist, but may have startled our neighbour. I have just been to check and have found the piglet dead in its nest under the infra-red light. We tried our best to save the little creature but it wouldn’t or couldn’t take the help we offered. In Jerusalem on a great feast day, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice: “If a man is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (John 7:37,38) We read on that people reacted in different ways. Some believed and said: “He is the Christ”, others wanted to arrest him. They all needed the living water that only Jesus could supply, but only a few would take it, the rest were indifferent or antagonistic and missed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain eternal life. At Easter time we remember that Jesus’ death and resurrection offer us a new start in a life. Some believe and are renewed, others are indifferent or antagonistic. How tragic for those who reject this offer. How disappointing for our heavenly Father who “so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16.
