Movement is critical for your baby’s development

Rika Terblanche from Twinkle Star Baby Gym highlighted the importance of movements after a baby is born.

POLOKWANE – A baby’s movements before and after birth are a key indicator of their well-being and development.

“For a newborn baby, it is crucial to be massaged as it kickstarts the brain and activates their muscles. Another important aspect is tummy time. This is time spent on their tummies and it helps them to develop stronger neck muscles,” Terblanche explained. According to her, you have to teach your child different moving experiences. She said that soon after birth, babies are supposed to be able to move around.

“Your baby needs to be able to interact and make small movements. They are more clever than we give them credit for, so at that stage they need to be able to try and reach for things and move their feet as well,” she added.

Tumi Modise is the mother of four and her youngest daughter is only a few days old. “I have four children and what I have noticed is that all babies are different. So far my daughter moves around enough and I am happy since she is only a few days old. I would advise parents to be aware of the different movements their children do to notice their development or if there are any problems,” Modise explained. Terblanche concluded that if a child doesn’t move enough, parents should consult a chiropractor to see if they can resolve possible movement impairment the child might have.
