Riaan sets sights on go-kart world championships title

POLOKWANE – Riaan Roux’s (27) passion for racing started at a young age when he first saw Formula 1 driver, Michael Schumacher race.
“I told myself that I will one day be his teammate,” says Riaan.
Riaan is a go-kart racer. He bought his first kart, a 100cc in 2011 at the age of 24.
“I had my first race on June 9, 2011 in Pretoria. I finished fifth in the first heat and ended the race fifth overall,” he says.
During his second race in October 2012, also in Pretoria, he ended the race in sixth place overall after he did not finish the second heat due to a spin in the fourth lap.
For Riaan, go-karting is the start of his racing career. “I want to start at the bottom and work my way up.
“I see myself as one of South Africa’s best racers, being counted among legends such as Ben Morgenrood, Michael Stephen and Willie Hepburn.”
For Riaan, having started late in go-kart racing makes it is sometimes challenging for him to compete at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals as he has a lot of catching up to do to his peers, but with hard work, he knows he can achieve this dream of becoming a world champion.
Riaan’s first race for the 2014 season will be on Saturday, January 18 at Zwartkops.
Sponsorship is important as Riaan has to travel long distances to compete in races.
He needs assistance with the following:
• Tyres, slicks and dry.
• Race day entries.
• Financial support for accommodation and travelling.
Anyone interested in assisting Riaan can send an e-mail to riaanpcr870317@gmail.com.
