Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club midfielder Hlompho Kekana will stage a developmental soccer tournament in his hometown of Zebediela in December to give aspirant soccer players a platform to showcase their talent.
Kekana, who has been instrumental in Sundowns’ success since joining them from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2011, said he hopes the tournament will be a stepping stone to the young soccer players in Zebediela and surrounds.
“This is one way of giving back to the community. I started playing soccer in local tournaments and moved on to local sport academies. It was not an easy road, but through hard work and perseverance I was able to play football professionally. We all need to start somewhere and I think it is important to give everyone an opportunity,” Kekana said.
He also mentioned that he wanted to stage the tournament during the off season period but due to limited time he was unable to. “I then chose December because everyone will be around and we will have enough time to prepare.”
