Nearly R13 000 was raised towards anti-rhino poaching when athletes from Polokwane participated in the Kruger National Park Anti-Rhino Poaching Fundraiser Fun Run hosted by the Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) at Savannah Mall on Saturday.
According to Corrie Calitz, PAC Chairman, approximately 350 athletes took part in the 5 and 10 km fun runs both of which started and finished at the mall. Entry was open to the entire community at R30 for the 5 km race and R50 for the 10 km.
Calitz explained that funds were generated from entrance fees and donations received from various private individuals and will be transferred to South African National Parks who will then allocate it towards the Nature Conservation Fund.
In the 5 km fun run, Lucky Lebese finished first with Kabelo Mongala short on his heels while Marlize Notley was the first woman to finish the run. In the 10 km fun run Tshipa Zeinel ran fastest with Koketjo Gumbo in second place and Levi Mojapelo in third.
After the race, meal and drinks vouchers sponsored by a local restaurant were handed to some of the athletes during a lucky draw.
