Baroka Football Club goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke was denied the honour of being the first African to win a Fifa Puskàs Award by Arsenal and France striker Olivier Giroud in London on Monday.
Masuleke’s overhead kick goal against Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership clash last year will remain one of the better goals in the history of football.
Club Spokesperson Jimmy Ngobeni said they were proud of Masuluke for representing Africa, the country and club on a global stage. “For him to go to London and represent us is a winner. No one in the country has ever been to that extent in the Fifa awards. As club we are saying well done to him and the best is yet to come,” Ngobeni said.
Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Onicca Moloi also commended Masuluke for putting Limpopo on the football map.
“He is our hero and we are proud of him. The whole world knows Limpopo because of him. We say to him, well done for reaching the top three of the Fifa Awards,” Moloi said.
