Meet Limpopo’s top cricketer

Stefné Pretorius (22) was named top female cricket player in Limpopo at Limpopo Impala Cricket's award ceremony, which was held at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on April 23.

POLOKWANE – Stefné Pretorius (22) was named top female cricket player in Limpopo at Limpopo Impala Cricket’s award ceremony, which was held at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on April 23.

Pretorius said she started playing cricket when she was nine years old. “I played cricket with the boys when I was in primary school. I played in the second division as the coaches thought that the boys would bully me if I played in the first division,” said Pretorius. She added that she was a sports fanatic and knew her sport well.

Pretorius was chosen for the u/16 Limpopo team in 2007. She played in East London in 2009 during the national championships. She was chosen to be part of the u/19 Limpopo team in 2010, which competed on national level in Johannesburg.

She has won several trophies and medals after being crowned best player of the match in various games against different teams.

“I made it my duty to master the rules of different sporting codes. I played netball and also took part in various athletic items at primary school level.”

According to Pretorius, a player has to be committed, passionate and hard working to excel in sport.

She made the South African cricket squad last year, but was not chosen for the final South African team.

“My one wish is to play for a professional cricket club. Then I would be able to earn money playing cricket and look after my family,” she said.
