SA Open final eludes Montjane
Local wheelchair tennis star, Kgothatso Montjane, was defeated by the world number four player in the semi-finals of the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) South African Open at Ellis Park last Friday.
POLOKWANE – Local wheelchair tennis star, Kgothatso Montjane, was defeated by the world number four player in the semi-finals of the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) South African Open at Ellis Park last Friday.
Montjane, the runner-up of the Gauteng Open, progressed to the women’s singles quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mariska Venter, a fellow South African wheelchair tennis player.
Montjane also made it through to the women’s singles quarter-finals, beating Francesca Mardones from Chile 6-2, 6-3.
“I was really looking forward to getting through to the semi-finals. It was only the top seeds in action in the quarter-finals, so it was the toughest part of the draw.
“Going forward it’s going to be even tougher. But I need to keep taking it one match at a time,” said Montjane, who faced the second seed and world number four, Aniek van Koot from The Netherlands in the semi-finals.
Van Koot won the match 6-3, 6-4 against Montjane and progressed to the finals.
Van Koot was also victorious over the Gauteng Open winner, Sabine Ellerbrock to take the South African Open.
