Peddals push through pain

POLOKWANE – The very first Polokwane Mayoral Cycle Race got off to a speedy start at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, with mayor Freddy Greaver and 160 cyclists part of the action.

Cyclists took part in 96km, 45km and 15, 5km races, which were organised in collaboration with Cycle Lab.

In the 96km race, David Maree and Myles van Musshenbroek from Team Abantu ensured an action-packed sprint finish with the two team mates finishing the race within split seconds of each other.

Maree was the overall winner and collected R10 000 in prize money. Abantu riders, Van Musshenbroek and Calvin Beneke took second and third place.

“It was an exceptionally well organised event with good, safe roads. It really is great to have the organisers of an event host us professionals the way they did, setting the bar very high for other race organisers. We look forward to coming back next year with a full team,” said Maree.

Still in the 96km distance, the open female overall winner win, which carried R10 000 in prize money, went to Anli Kachelhoffer who was followed by Carla Oberholzer and Juanita Venter.

Chris de Klerk took first place in the open male 45km distance, followed by Marco Roets and Zian van den Heever. The women’s open category honours in the 45km distance went to Cherie Siebert, followed by Amanda Stopforth and Marina Weyer.

“It was awesome and very tiring. I am glad that I finished,” said Greaver after finishing the 45km race. “It is our goal to make Polokwane the sporting hub of Limpopo,” he added.

To further promote healthy living and non-motorised transport, Greaver handed out 30 bicycles to children at the event.

Greaver and roads and transport MEC, Lehlogonolo Masoga, both joined the Cycle Lab Club too.
