A 2nd victory for police’s tennis ace

ANANIAS Lediga made headlines when he won the men's open of the South African Police Service National Tennis Championships held in Potchefstroom last year.

ANANIAS Lediga made headlines when he won the men’s open of the South African Police Service National Tennis Championships held in Potchefstroom last year.

Lediga has done it again, successfully defending his title by beating five-time champion, Riaan Baaitjies, from the Western Cape 7-6, 6-1 at the Polokwane tennis courts on Friday.

Lediga said playing at home motivated him to retain his title, and he now wanted to dominate the SAPS National Tennis Championships for years to come.

“I was crowned as the champion in 2013 and critics said it was because Baaitjies was not there.

“When I met him on Friday, it was the perfect opportunity to prove that last year’s victory was not a fluke,” Lediga said.

Acting provincial police commissioner, Maj Gen Lesiba Mashilo said the province was proud of Lediga, saying his achievement was something SAPS Limpopo would cherish for a long time.

“We congratulate Lediga for successfully defending his title. Beating a five-time champion is no child’s play, and Lediga made a statement that his victory last year was no fluke. He has made everybody in the province very proud,” Mashilo said.

Lediga not only defended his title, but also retained his place in the SAPS national tennis team, which he has been a member of for a number of years.
