Cyclists light up city’s streets

POLOKWANE – Polokwane has joined more than 300 cities worldwide by hosting the city’s first Critical Mass cycling event.
More than 60 cyclists were part of the ride, which was held at Platinum Park recently.
Critical Mass takes place on the last Friday of every month, and the theme for the ride was “lights”, and most of the cyclists went all out with torches, headlamps, glow sticks and even fairy-lights decorating their bicycles and helmets.
One of the organisers, Jaco Fourie of CycleLab Polokwane said he was impressed with the turn-out.
“Critical Mass is a global event that aims to create awareness for cyclists on the road and for non-motorised transport,” said Fourie.
“We also aim to pick a charity and donate needed items to the organisation, which we will deliver en masse during the ride.
“For example, we will ask each cyclist to bring a soft toy and deliver it to the children’s ward at a hospital or at a children’s home.
“What also makes this event special is that anyone can join in the fun. It is not a competitive ride and children and leisurely cyclists are welcome.
“We usually stop for a beverage halfway through the ride.”
