Lim wrestlers bag medals

Seven wrestlers from the province who were part of the national wrestling team returned with a bag full of medals from the African Continent Championships, which were held in Alexandria, Egypt recently.

POLOKWANE – Seven wrestlers from the province who were part of the national wrestling team returned with a bag full of medals from the African Continent Championships, which were held in Alexandria, Egypt recently.

The championships were held under the auspices of the International Wrestling Federation, and were for the cadets, which are u/17 wrestlers and the juniors, which are u/20 wrestlers.

According to Louis de Lange, Limpopo Wrestling Association president, the championships were qualifiers for the World Cadet and Junior Championships, with the World Cadets Championships taking place in Slovakia in July and the World Youth Championships taking place in China in August.

De Lange said the African Continent Championships went well, and he was happy with the way Limpopo wrestlers fought for a spot in the next championships.

The wrestlers returned with 13 medals, of which one was gold, two were silver and 10 were bronze medals.

Jan Roets, national wrestling coach said the wrestlers did exceptionally well and he believed they would represent the country well in the youth and cadet championships.

“I am happy with the wrestlers’ performance. Other countries also did well, but they could not match our standard in freestyle,” he said.

Elbert Steyn qualified for the youth Olympics in China after winning a gold medal in the qualifying weight category.

De Lange said the Limpopo Wrestling Association was extremely grateful to the department of sport, arts and culture for their financial support.
