Grannies kicking it for their health
PLAYING soccer is one of the quickest ways to combating high blood pressure for people over 50 years of age.
PLAYING soccer is one of the quickest ways to combating high blood pressure for people over 50 years of age.
This was according to Johana Machava, chairperson of the Giyani Older Persons’ Forum.
Speaking during the older persons’ qualifying games at the Giyani Stadium recently, Machava said those who participated in soccer, running and other labour intensive sporting codes had a greater chance of reducing their high blood pressure.
“This is why the Greater Giyani Older Persons’ Forum, always promotes activities that are aimed at reaping health benefits. The aim is not only to win but to have fun in such a way that we also benefit our health and avoid developing high blood pressure,” she said.
Machava said research showed that women who were physically active strengthened their bones and dramatically reduced their blood pressure.
“Beside the health benefits related to high blood pressure, the social aspect of getting together as older people also helps to improve stress levels,” she said.
She said the winners of the day’s games would proceed to play at district level on June 24.
“We still have a long way to go; those who qualify provincially will proceed to the national level,” she said.
Greater Giyani mayor, Pat Hlungwani commended the Giyani Older Persons’ Forum for their efforts in promoting good health. “It is very encouraging to see our grandmothers play soccer. As government, we’re happy because this does not only benefit the participants, but also teaches young people a valuable lesson,” he said.
