A 4th win for the Giyani All Stars

GIYANI All Stars look set to keep the Greater Giyani Mayoral Tournament trophy at home after beating Makhuva Man united 4-0 on Saturday to make it through to the tournament’s finals, which are scheduled for Saturday.

The match, which was played at the Giyani Stadium, saw All Stars put on another impressive performance, which has seen them lift the tournament’s trophy year after year for four consecutive years.

The tournament, which has a price tag of R15 000 for the winners and R10 000 for the runner-ups, was formed by various teams from the Greater Giyani Municipality’s 30 wards.

All Stars comprised players from ward 11, while the rest of the teams were from villages around the Giyani Municipality. Asked about the prospects of winning the tournament for the fifth time, the captain of Giyani All Stars, Oscar Mathebula said the team planned to keep the trophy at home.

“We understand that our next game will be tough since the team that we’re likely to meet in the finals has few players that play at Vodacom league level, and that will be a challenge for us,” he said.

“We will be bolstered by home ground advantage. We have never lost a final match at this stadium,” he said.

The Giyani mayor, Pat Hlungwani, said the aim of the tournament “was to contribute towards the development of sport in the Greater Giyani Municipality, through nurturing and supporting of talent”.
