Technique, artistry, strength: Meet Polokwane acrobat Mufunwa Mafenya

From months of hard work to a provincial podium finish – Eagle’s Nest Christian School learner Mufunwa Mafenya is now set to represent Limpopo on the national stage.

POLOKWANE – Congratulations are in order for young dancer Mufunwa Mafenya from Eagle’s Nest Christian School, who has earned a place in the Limpopo team following an outstanding performance at the recent Acrobatic Solo Dance Sport Association (Assa) provincial qualifier.

A moment worth celebrating

Mafenya secured second place in the highly competitive level five division, impressing judges with her technique, artistry and strength.

The achievement earned her a coveted spot on the Limpopo team for the next stage of competition.

The Assa provincial qualifier brought together some of Limpopo’s top acrobatic solo dancers, who competed across various levels for provincial honours.

Level five is known for its demanding technical requirements, combining dance, flexibility, balance and acrobatic elements into a single routine.

Hard work behind the shine

Mafenya’s second-place finish reflects months of hard work, discipline and commitment to her craft.

Her coaches praised her work ethic and composure under pressure, saying she delivered a confident and polished performance when it mattered most.

A proud school family

Primary phase principal Bertie de Lange was among the first to congratulate her.

“We are incredibly proud of Mufunwa. To achieve second place at provincial level is no small feat, and to be selected for the Limpopo team is a wonderful honour,” De Lange said.

He also wished her well as she prepares to represent not only the province, but also her dance club and school.

“Mufunwa is an example to her peers of what hard work and passion can achieve. We will be cheering her on every step of the way,” he said.

Inspiring the next generation

Acrobatic solo dance is a growing sport that blends gymnastics, dance and acrobatics, requiring athletes to demonstrate flexibility, strength, musicality and performance quality.

Selection to the provincial team places Mafenya among Limpopo’s top young dancers and opens the door to national-level competition. Her achievement has also inspired fellow learners and teachers at Eagle’s Nest, many of whom have praised her dedication and success.

Mafenya will now join the Limpopo team for training camps and preparations ahead of the next round of competitions.

Carrying the community’s flag

“I’m proud to have been selected and to represent my school, club and province. It is a great honour,” she said.

For now, Mufunwa and her family are enjoying the moment.

“We know Mufunwa will carry our flag with grace and determination. Eagle’s Nest wishes her all the best as she continues her dance journey,” De Lange said.
