LIMPOPO middleweight champion, Sipho “Delta” Mukhithi says he might not be able to return to the boxing ring soon.
This news comes after he sustained a leg fracture in a collision on the N1 in April.
Delta told CV he was on his way to Gauteng for training when the accident happened. According to him, the taxi he was travelling in overturned.
“I sustained a fracture of my leg and hand. I am lucky to have survived.
“I spent a month at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital and another month at the Tshilidzini Hospital in the Vhembe district, where I was discharged on June 8.
“The horror of the accident disturbed me so much I don’t think I will go back to the ring. I’m also failing to accept my situation. Boxing was my life and I was feeding my family through it,” said Mukhithi.
In 2003, Mukhithi knocked out Ntshengedzeni Netshivhera in the third round to win the provincial middleweight championship at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre.
“I started participating in boxing in 1993 when my classmates and I used to play with boxing gloves at Ligege Secondary School in Duthuni near Thohoyandou. I realised that I was better than my peers. From there I joined Venda Amateur Boxing Association until I turned professional in 2000. My dream was to see myself becoming a world champion, and now it is shattered,” he said.
Phathutshedzo Dongola, the promoter at Limpopo Champ Boxing Promotion wished Mukhithi a speedy recovery and said he hoped he would return to the ring soon.
