Johanna shows up younger runners

Johanna Montjane (79) says she has learnt a lot from the 2014 Soccer World Cup that was held in Brazil.

POLOKWANE – Johanna Montjane (79) says she has learnt a lot from the 2014 Soccer World Cup that was held in Brazil.

Montjane is a midfielder for Vhakegula Vhakegula FC, the gogo-team that was honoured with a trip to Brazil for the Soccer World Cup.

At the age of 79, Montjane believes she is still strong, which is why she has decided to play soccer and compete in 5km races.

“My friends and family encouraged me to join the soccer team. They say I am still strong and fit to run. I then started training hard and joined the team. It feels good to exercise,” she says.

Montjane ran her first 5km race at the recent Savannah Mall 3-in-1 road race, where she received a medal of participation after finishing the race. She says she competed with young people and managed to outrun some of them.

“I don’t want to let myself go because I realised that one gets sick easily if you don’t exercise. People should eat healthy to stay healthy. I will continue playing soccer and taking part in athletics to stay strong.”

She says young people are lazy these days and don’t exercise enough.

Montjane thanked everyone who has shown her support and also thanked all the sponsors.

“During the race, young people looked surprised to see an old woman getting ready for the 5km race. I told them to be careful because I might just surprise them and win the gold medal. I eat a lot of fruit everyday to get energy,” said Montjane.
