Semenya’s cricket record still stands

Cricket South Africa provincial talent scout and Limpopo Impala Cricket acting manager, Thabo Semenya, says he is still regarded as the best cricket coach in the province after he set a record in 2008.

POLOKWANE – Cricket South Africa provincial talent scout and Limpopo Impala Cricket acting manager, Thabo Semenya, says he is still regarded as the best cricket coach in the province after he set a record in 2008.

In 2008, Semenya coached the provincial u/17 cricket team who set a record when they won all five of their matches during the national cricket championship. The team could not go on to win the nationals as the match was cancelled due to rain.

He said the team’s success had made the province proud and people are still talking about their performance today.

Semenya has been involved with the sport of cricket for more than 20 years, and says hard work is what brought him to where he is today.

“I no longer play cricket, but I have to make sure people are playing and have all the equipment they need. I have produced a few professional cricket players since I started coaching in 1999 and I have also competed with professional players such as Tumi Masikela during my time as a player,” he says.

He coached the provincial u/15 team for five years, the u/17 team for four years, the u/19 team for two years and the women’s senior team for five years.

He says sport was something that brought people together and helped to keep children out of trouble. “That is why people should participate in sport,” he said, adding that hard work and determination went a long way in achieving one’s goals.

Semenya urges young people to take sport seriously. “Stay fit and live a healthy lifestyle. Sport can help to earn a living.”
