Model racing in Bushveld

POLOKWANE – The Bushveld Model Racing Club held the second leg of five nationals at the Bushveld Racing tracks recently.

The tournament, which catered for drivers from all over South Africa, was sanctioned by the South African Radio Drivers association (SARDA).

According to Peter Janse van Vuuren, tournament organiser and SARDA treasurer, the event consisted of South Africa’s top operators competing with one to 10 scale radio controlled cars around the track for six minutes per race in eight different classes.

Operators competed in various classes such as two-wheel drive buggies stock, stadium trucks stock, four-wheel drive buggies stock, short course trucks two-wheel drive, short course trucks four-wheel drive, two-wheel drive buggies modified, stadium trucks modified and four-wheel drive buggies modified.

“These are battery-operated high performance models and are very technically advanced and thus can not be called ‘toys’. These cars can be fully maintained as replacement parts are available. Interesting fact that this is one of the only sport disciplines that does not discriminate against gender or age,” Janse van Vuuren said.

“Tire choice and car setup are the major factors as every event has a different track surface and the cars will have to be adjusted accordingly. This year we had a challenge as it rained and the surface changed from dry to wet conditions,” he added.

The best operators received trophies for their best performances. Due to heavy rain, one heat had to be cancelled.
