Bowlers from two regions in the province gathered at the Polokwane Bowls Club to compete in the Limpopo Mixed Pairs finals on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – Bowlers from two regions in the province gathered at the Polokwane Bowls Club to compete in the Limpopo Mixed Pairs finals on Saturday.

Four teams competed in open side division and the other four in senior side.

Piet Jordaan and Jerry Morgan were announced as winners in the open side while Ben Groenewald and Piekie Prinsloo were crowned winners of the mixed pairs in the senior side.

According to Christo van der Merwe, Polokwane Bowls Club president the Limpopo finals are usually held at the club since it is regarded as the central region.

Players who competed in the finals were from regions such as Impala and Waterberg. He said the winners of the tournament get nothing as a reward, but the title ‘Champions’.

“Winners of various tournaments will gather at the end of the year to receive certificates. Teams played four elimination rounds before reaching the finals and we are now happy to announce our winners,” added van der Merwe.

He further said bowlers will flock to the club on Saturday, April 18 to compete in Club Pro-10 tournament and the Limpopo pro-finals are expected to play on April 25.

Van der Merwe said young people should consider the sport and do away with the myth that is painted around it that bowls is only meant for old people.

“The sport caters for all ages and races and I would encourage young people to join forces with us so that we can take the sport to the next level,” he said.
