POLOKWANE – TWENTY-two young soccer players were selected to participate in the Polokwane City FC trials in Polokwane on Monday.

The players were selected during a four-day tournament, which was held at the Marula Mine sports ground in Ga-Sekhukhune recently.

The tournament coordinator, Joel Molamo, said these players were under the age of 19 and were selected from the 28 teams that participated in the tournament.

He said he believed that more than two players would make it during the trials.

“I trained the players, while Marula Mine offered transported them to the trials,” said Molamo.

Wake Up 2015 FC and More Fire FC were announced as the best teams in the tournament.

Wake Up 2015 didn’t concede goals during the tournament and scored a total of 27 goals, while More Fire had a score of 14 goals in two matches.

“The aim of the Let the Games Begin Sports Development, which organised the tournament, was to promote sport in the community and among sports associations connected with communities to ensure the continuation of sport of a high standard, sports clinics and any other activities which may be decided on by the executive committee to reach the objectives incorporated as an integral part of these communities,” said Molamo.

He said the sports development planned to host school tournaments to develop learners’ sports skills. Needy learners would also be presented with school uniforms and food parcels during the tournament.

“The sporting codes will be soccer, netball, softball, volleyball, body building, pool, athletics, cricket, rugby, tennis, basketball, short put and javelin. This will also play a huge role in ensuring the awareness on matters relating to health and safety,” Molamo said.
