LIMPOPO – Two Limpopo teams, both from the Capricorn District, added to South Africa’s medal tally when they scooped gold medals in their categories at the fifth Southern African Teachers Organisation (Sato) games held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal recently.
Limpopo entered two teams, the women’s basketball team and male lawn tennis team, which represented South Africa and emerged as the winners in their sports categories.
Sato is a regional teacher’s federation made up of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states. Among the members are South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola, Tanzania, Zambia, Seychelles and Madagascar. In a statement issued ahead of the games, the host teachers’ organisation, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu), said: “As sport is the most effective means of uniting people irrespective of race, colour or creed, the Sato games provide educators from different teachers’ unions with an opportunity to gather and celebrate their profession”.
The two-day event saw teachers compete in soccer, netball, volleyball, table tennis, lawn tennis, basketball, darts and athletics. The overall winner of the games was Botswana with 23 medals, 11 of which were gold. South Africa came second with 21 medals, seven of which were gold. The 2016 games will be hosted by Tanzania. The games are held annually on a rotational basis among member countries.
Speaking after their return, the Limpopo women’s basketball team manager, Hellen Sekoele, said: “We did exceptionally well, all the players had the same objective – to make the province and country proud,” she said. She also said they look forward to next year’s games.
