‘Referee too harsh’ says SuperSport United coach

Kaizer Chiefs walloped SuperSport United 4-1 in the PSL clash played at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday evening.

POLOKWANE – Kaizer Chiefs walloped Matsatsantsa 4-1 in the PSL clash played at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday evening.

SuperSport coach, Gordon Igesund says his team could have equalised when Amakosi were still leading by two goals, had the referee not taken the decision to send Dean Furman off with a second bookable offence.

Kaizer Chiefs walloped Matsatsantsa 4-1 with George Lebese’s brace in the 48th and 88th minute, Irvin Bukenya’s header in the 58th minute and Simphiwe Tshabalala with a penalty in the 93rd minute.

Matsatsantsa was the first to find the back of the net through Dove Wome in the 21st minute when they dominated the first half of the game.

Chiefs retaliated in the second half, with Lebese terrorising United’s defense.

Igesund feels the dismissal of Furman was harsh.

“These kind of decisions change games. Furman is playing in this league for the first time and is still finding his feet.

“The pace of the game is a bit quicker and it was tough for him to adjust. He still didn’t play badly though. He will get better with time and adjust to the faster pace,” said Igesund.

Chiefs coach Steve Khomphela said his boys couldn’t intervene immediately, they had to wait until halftime as United were dominating.

“In the second half, we managed to change the structure. Sometimes a match will tell you what is required and it is important to read quickly on this, to interpret and apply the best moves.

“The players applied themselves very well and as for United, they came with a good fight and it was not easy for us. It was a nice match and we eagerly await future matches,” Khomphela said.

“First half, all the opponents did was to push both their wingers to our full-backs, and both strikers to the centre-back. Our goalkeeper couldn’t start from the back. It became a game that we don’t like because when we play long balls they hit Bongani Khumalo and Clinton Daniels’ wall and it became an aggregate.

Dean Furman was behind Bernard Parker, so Parker couldn’t breathe and we needed to find space. The minute they packed offensive players on our defenders, we couldn’t start our balls from the back.

“We then put more bodies in the midfield and maintained stability at the back.

“Our players responded well to that tactical switch and it took long for SuperSport to read what was happening so we punished them,” said Khomphela.
