POLOKWANE – Seshego Sonics are ready to go all out today (16 December) when they host the touring teams on the Seshego outdoor basketball courts for the Reconciliation Cup.
The Reconciliation Cup was put on a moratorium a few years ago and today’s event is set to reignite the basketball furor.
A total of eight teams have already confirmed their participation in this tournament.
They are Sonics seniors and juniors, Phoenix, Pretoria Warriors, Vhembe Ballers, Lephalale-based outfit Dream Team, Polokwane Hawks and Vleifontein from Elim.
Ahead of this competition, Sonics’ talismanic point guard and skipper of the senior side, Peter Seema, was in high spirits, threatening to wallop their opponents on their home turf.
Seema said: “We want to remind our visitors it is not a good idea to intrude into a snake’s hideout and rub it the wrong way.
“We will enjoy a massive territorial advantage as we will play in our own backyard where we will be cheered by our fanatical home fans.”
Although the Sonics seniors have no head coach, Seema said they will still give a good account of themselves.
“Despite the absence of a full-time mentor, we complement each other very well as we have been together for many years. We are one of the most competitive teams in the province who can rise to the occasion on match day.
“Today we are going to prove our competitiveness to the opposition teams and show our loyal supporters a glimpses of brilliance,” Seema said confidently.
The Sonics senior team comprises of Jimmy Molonyama (shooting/point guard), Sello Rapudi (sturdy guard), Lloyd Morudu (power forward), Kgopotso Rachidi (nimble-guard), Matsobane Mboweni (power forward), Oscar Mabotja and Diketso Mashile (shooting guards), and Mojalefa Maponya (power forward).
In the Sonics juniors, the man who will be the centre of attraction will be David Moloto.
The young man who is expected to make a considerable contribution in the senior line-ups next year has numerous accolades to his name, one of which was being remarkably named the Most Valuable Player twice in one season.
Limpopo Basketball Association chairman, Gazani Khoza, who is who is a former Sonics playmaker himself, announced they plan to stage this competition on an annual basis at the local courts ahead of this year’s edition.
“We plan to stage the Reconciliation Cup every year. Plans are already afoot and we appeal to good Samaritans to give us financial support to ensure this competition becomes a resounding success,” said Khoza.
