Hornbills crowned Pro 20 winners

For the first time in four years, the Hornbill Cricket Team were crowned the winners of the Pro 20 Tournament.

POLOKWANE – “I am elated. It has been four years since we last had the honour of winning the tournament. The tournament was well organised and well run and every participant was excited and positive. Every match was played in a good spirit,” says Hornbill team captain, Christopher Atherstone. The Hornbill team played in the Pro 20 finals against Aces on Sunday after winning their semifinal match against the Eagles. Aces won against Mogol.

In the final, Aces won the toss and decided to field first. Leon Zietsman and Haccum Hough were the opening bowlers for the Aces while Paul Hawken and Scott Atherstone opened the batting for the Hornbills.

After Hornbills were out for 156 runs for seven wickets, Aces went in to bat with Stebian van der Walt and Chris de Klerk as opening batsmen. Christopher Atherstone and Gavin Dorfling were opening bowlers for the Hornbills. After a tough match, Hornbills won with 11 runs after taking out Aces on 146 runs for five wickets. “I think this is an amazing initiative by Limpopo Cricket Union to help develop club cricket,” says Aces captain, Stebian van der Walt. “The spirit between the teams is breathtaking and we forged several new friendships. Every match was highly competitive and the two best teams in the province will get the chance to play against other unions,” Van der Walt said.

After the game, Limpopo Impala Cricket Manager, Feizal Kimmie, congratulated both teams on their great season. “I look forward to see you represent us at the club championships in September,” Kimmie said.
