Caster nominated for Sportswoman of the Year award

Limpopo born and bred 2016 Olympic gold medallist, Caster Semenya, has been nominated for the prestigious 2018 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award.

POLOKWANE- Semenya is nominated alongside Wimbledon champion, Garbiñe Muguruza, Australian Open champion, Serena Williams, 16-time world athletics championship medallist, Allyson Felix, 19-year-old swimmer Katie Ledecky and overall world cup champion skier, Mikaela Shiffrin.

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Onicca Moloi, congratulated Semenya on the nomination.

“The golden girl from Limpopo, Caster Semenya continues to represent us exceptionally well on international stages and as Limpopo we’re immensely proud of her sporting success,” Moloi said.

“We’re confident she’ll win the award and as the only African athlete in the category, her potential win will be a victory for the entire continent,” she added.

The award is conferred on the sportswoman who best demonstrates supreme athletic performance and achievement such as consecutive or multiple world, continental, international or national major championship titles in a variety sport or the establishment of world records or best performances.

“It is an honour to be nominated for the Laureus award. Blessed are those who believe in the Lord and place everything in His hands,” Semenya said.

Voting for the nominees is done by members of the Laureus World Sports Academy and the winners will be revealed in Monaco, Europe on 27 February.
