Coach encourages female soccer players to leverage on oppotunities
Soccer coach Maria Makoma Matlou said female soccer is growing and there are many opportunities for young girls who are passionate about the sport.
POLOKWANE – Local football administrator and female soccer coach Maria Makoma Matlou urges young aspiring female soccer players to join various soccer teams in and around Polokwane and leverage on the opportunities presented by the game.
The 35-year-old coach says female soccer is growing and there are a lot of opportunities for young girls who are passionate about the sport.
“Professional female soccer teams from overseas are looking for players from this province. Universities are looking for female soccer players to form teams that will compete in tertiary institutions’ soccer tournaments. There are many bursaries that universities want to offer to female soccer players. So there is a reason for them to join soccer clubs and enjoy the beautiful game.”

Matlou boasts the Confederation of African Football (CAF) coaching licence from South African Football Association.
She says she had to pursue the course because she aspires to coach one of the top soccer teams in Europe.
“I want to start with a local soccer team, then move up the national ranks. I am looking at Banyana Banyana but Europe is the ultimate.”
While obtaining her licence, Matlou learned about the laws of soccer and modern techniques. She also explored the theoretical and practical side of football.
