Steyn de Lange excels in world championships
Steyn de Lange recently competed in the u/23 World Wrestling Championships in Terana, Albania and made sport enthusiasts of his home city extremely proud.
POLOKWANE – Member of the Ion Baciu Wrestling Club in the city, Steyn de Lange recently competed in the u/23 World Wrestling Championships in Terana, Albania and made sport enthusiasts of his home city extremely proud.
According to the South African Wrestling Association, it was a day of mixed emotions, with De Lange starting the day with a massively impressive performance, defeating the current third ranked senior 92kg wrestler Dynes Sahaliuk from the Ukraine, with a result of 7-4.
In the quarter-final De Lange took on Muzsa Arsunkaev from Hungary and gave a wonderful account of himself and a result that has brought much debate. Unfortunately Arsunkaev lost his semi-final match against Jacob Cardenas from the US, 5-2, eliminating De Lange from the competition.
According to his trainer, Jan Roets, there is massive excitement in the De Lange camp.
“Our champion will start his action-packed collegiate season as soon as he gets back to the US and we can’t wait to follow this journey,” Roets echoed the remarks of the South African Wrestling Association, and added that De Lange’s 2024 achievements have been absolutely phenomenal with his continuous rise in world wrestling at the early age of 23. We look forward to the next Olympic cycle as a nation as well as Steyn’s return to his club after concluding his studies at the US university where he holds a scholarship,” Roets concluded.
