Seshego Stadium reopens, hosts PSL matches

Seshego Stadium reopens after renovations, hosting PSL matches for the first time in 23 years, with plans for a possible name change.

POLOKWANE – Seshego Stadium officially reopened on February 8 after undergoing significant renovations to meet the standards for hosting professional matches. With a seating capacity of 15 000, the stadium is now set to host Premier Soccer League (PSL) games for the first time in 23 years.

During the relaunch, Polokwane Mayor John Mpe highlighted the stadium’s role in revitalising the township’s economy and sporting culture. “We are very happy to welcome professional games back to Seshego and look forward to hosting night matches as well.”

The stadium’s revival provides local football fans with a long-awaited opportunity to watch high-level matches without having to travel far.

The first PSL match at the revamped venue saw Magesi FC secure a 2-0 victory over Cape Town City, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Mpe and Kgoshi Kgabo Moloto III, who witnessed the event. “Congratulations to Magesi FC.

“This is a great way to relaunch professional football in the township, and we aim to balance hosting games between the Peter Mokaba, and Seshego Stadium,” Mpe added.

During an earlier meeting, Mpe proposed renaming the stadium after Kgoshi Seshigo, the late great-grandfather of Kgoshi Kgabo Moloto III, to honour the cultural heritage, however, he emphasised that a formal public participation process would be followed before any final decision is made.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed that the renaming process would involve community engagement.

“The municipality will announce all steps, including public participation, once the necessary procedures are completed,” Selala stated.

Meanwhile, the proposal has sparked debate among Seshego residents, many of whom have shared their opinions on social media. Some argue that the stadium should be named after a local sporting legend.

See residents’comments about the renaming of the stadium:

Tebogo Mokwele: “What has the late Kgoshi Seshigo done for our township to deserve this honour?”
Morris Phenyo Chere: “We have many fallen heroes who contributed immensely to our community. I suggest naming the stadium after Mahuma Paul Rapetsoa, an arts and culture activist.”
Matome Thabana: “The name should reflect the legacy of sport in Seshego. It should honour someone who achieved national or international recognition after playing at the stadium.”
Barel Legodi: “Why name it after Kgoshi Seshigo from Moletjie? What about former anti-apartheid activist Thabo Makunyne?”
