UL’s Phenomenals win third straight USSA dance title

Dance crew, The Phenomenals, from the University of Limpopo made history by winning their 3rd consecutive USSA dance title, bringing home 26 trophies.

POLOKWANE – The University Sports South Africa (USSA) hosted its annual national dance competition in Pietermaritzburg last Saturday, bringing together top university dance crews from across the country. This year’s event was jointly hosted by the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

Representing Limpopo, The Phenomenals – a hip hop dance crew from the University of Limpopo (UL), made history by winning their third consecutive USSA championship title.

Coached by international ballroom dance champion Happy Ramano and hip hop head coach Minorite ‘McMinnie’ Chauke, the crew showcased months of preparation and determination. Their powerful performance earned them the street dance formation title and the overall dance title. The team returned home with an impressive haul of 20 medals, multiple certificates and 26 trophies in both solo and duo dance categories. Some members also competed in ballroom, juggling two distinct dance styles.

Assistant coach and final-year media studies student Omphile Thibela shared how demanding it was to participate in both categories.

“The tiredness I felt after was intense, but it was all worth it,” he said.

Chauke praised the team’s dedication and talent. “Their hard work and dominance in the competition remain a steadfast inspiration. I feel blessed and appreciate the team and God for making it happen.”

This latest win further cements The Phenomenals’ reputation as one of South Africa’s leading university hip hop crews, placing both UL and Limpopo firmly in the national spotlight.
