Sunrise u/13s to shine at nationals

SUNRISE Primary School's u/13 girls hockey team are through to the nationals after a stunning performance at the provincial championships which was held at Hoërskool Pietersburg on October 7.

MOKOPANE – SUNRISE Primary School’s u/13 girls hockey team are through to the nationals after a stunning performance at the provincial championships which was held at Hoërskool Pietersburg on October 7.

The team maintained their unbeaten triumph as they walloped both Capricorn and Mopani districts with 5-0.

The hockey team is now ready for the South African Schools Sports National Championships, which will be held in Gauteng from December 10 to 16.

The team captain, Grace Moromudi, said she was confident that the team would not disappoint the province.

“We know that the competition gets tougher as the level increases, but we are ready for the nationals,” said Moromudi.

“We would like to assure Limpopo that we will do our level best to maintain our standards to keep us proud and shining.”

The Sunrise boys’ hockey team slipped off the championships when they lost 1-0 against Sekhukhune district, which was represented by Groblersdal Primary School. It was lack of communication in the defence box which cost them the prize to concede that crucial deciding goal.

Nonetheless, it was their first defeat since the beginning of the year and the coach, Kubiku Kozanai, attributed complacence to that goal. Like a wounded lion, the boys came into action with revenge at the World Diabetes Day Tournament at the Mahwelereng Stadium on Saturday, when they crushed Ebenezer High School’s u/13 boys’ hockey team with 8-2 and walloped Mokopane Primary School 15-0.

The prestigious tournament was sponsored by the Folang Medical Trust and Ebros Flame Grilled Chicken Restaurant.

Elsabe Schoeman, the director for Sunrise Primary School, said she was thrilled with the performance of the team and was also proud to see that hockey was growing in Mokopane, with the number of schools taking part in the sport increasing and proud that Sunrise was representing Limpopo in sport.
