THE saying, “like father like son” rings true for Japhter Luvhimbi (32), a sculptor and jewellery designer from Muledane in Thohoyandou, whose father taught him the craft.

He recently made a sculpture of Hector Peterson, which he presented to the University of Venda during their Africa Day celebrations.

“I started making sculptures in 2001 and I was taught by my father. My art is now a business. I have participated in several exhibitions and competitions and I have won third place in the Vhembe District Young Business of the Year Competition in 2011,” says Luvhimbi.

He says some of his artworks has been bought by the Wits University Art Gallery and Madi a Thavha Art Museum, while others were sold to tourists from the Netherlands the US and France.

“My jewellery was used in a fashion show and for Muvhango actresses. I am now running my own successful art company called Luvhimbi Fine Arts and Crafts, where we produce wooden jewellery such as earrings, necklaces and bracelets. We also make tables and trays,” he says.
