POLOKWANE – Excitement vibrated in the air over Westenburg last week when Chemical Reaction Dance Crew returned home.
They are not only hip hop world champions, but also the pride of Westenburg.
Chemical Reaction Dance Crew were recently crowned the number one hip hop dancers at the Dancestars World Masters competition in Croatia. The dancers have been dancing individually in different groups since 2006, but have been dancing together since March last year.
There were more than 4 000 dancers and 350 crews who competed over a period of three days and there were about 12 judges.
The judges were from Croatia, Italy, the US and the UK.
The community gathered at Bethel Fellowship in Ben Harris Street to welcome the crew and held a parade through the suburb, with bikers from Eagles Bikers Club, Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club and members of the Stress Crew joining the celebration.
“Being welcomed like royalty by the community was the proudest moment for us,” Leron Sinclair said. She said there were a lot of dancers, each with their own styles and techniques, which motivated them to be better and work harder to be the best.
It was the first time that the dancers travelled by aeroplane. “It was scary at first but very exciting. As we were getting ready to land and the aeroplane was over Croatia, the view was breathtaking. The land looked like it was designed, the forest looked like gardens with no wild grass,” William Khala said.
He said he would not forget the friendliness of the people in Croatia and the cleanliness of the place. “There was no litter, not even a piece of gum. The place was neat and clean.”
The dancers also said they would miss the mouth-watering food and beautiful view at the hotel where they stayed.
“Everyday we had a buffet, and the food was delicious. We stayed in the best hotel ever, it was on the beach with an awesome view,” Allan Seagole said.
The dancers are now preparing for their next competition, Dance to Las Vegas, which will take place in Las Vegas in August.
They are still in need of money for their trip and will be planning different fundraisers.
“We would appreciate everyone’s support as we must still raise a lot of money for us to represent South Africa, Limpopo, and specifically Westenburg. Anyone who is willing to sponsor us can contact our manager, Shané Sinclair at 079 717 0531,” said Peter Matsapola.
