Fresh sound of Africa in music and poetry

WHILE most young singers choose to perform popular music genres such as hip hop, R&B and kwaito, Ranwedzi Elekanyani and Luambo Muvhango chose to perform traditional music with poetry added.

VENDA – WHILE most young singers choose to perform popular music genres such as hip hop, R&B and kwaito, two men from Venda chose to perform traditional music with poetry added.

This, according to them, creates a unique fresh sound.

Ranwedzi Elekanyani and Luambo Muvhango met at church some time ago. “We used to sing in the church choir and that’s when we realised we had talent. We decided to start our own music group known as Nwedziboy Na Muvhango,” Muvhango explained.

The two talented singers just released their debut album titled Luambo lusongo thothela maafrica (The language must not die, Africans). Ranwedzi told Express that their album was about encouraging Africans to be proud of their langua-ges and heritage.

“We saw there was a gap which needed to be filled in the music industry so we decided to combine poetry and traditional music because people need to know about their cultures, especially the youth,” Elakanyani said.

Muvhango was born in a small village called Tshififi just outside Sibasa and Elekanyani was born in Duthuni village a few kilometres from Thohoyandou.

Their debut album enjoys a lot of airplay on several Limpopo radio stations.

Muvhango and Elekanyani said their music was well received.

“The support we receive from the people is overwhelming and we are glad about the exposure.

“We have worked hard to write, edit, record and produce our music to create something special.”
