Designer with style

After matriculating I took my business to the next level by going public with my designs," he says. His label name is Derby'ora.

SESHEGO – WEARING a small size does have its disadvantages, as 20-year-old Consolation Ratombo from Seshego realised when he always had to have his newly purchased clothes altered to fit him.

“I tried many brands and realised there was no perfect cut or fit for me. I am a size 28 so finding clothes that fit me perfectly is not easy. I was not happy, knowing that after every purchase I would have to alter my clothes to get the perfect fit for my small body,” Consolation explains.

He says his mother is a tailor and he grew up watching her altering clothes for other people. By the time he was in gr. 11 he knew exactly what he wanted his clothes to look like; he was very particular about his style, Consolation says.

“I started designing clothes for myself and making them with my mother’s sewing machine. Other people noticed and asked me to make clothes for them, too. After matriculating I took my business to the next level by going public with my designs,” he says. His label name is Derby’ora.

Things went so well for him that he decided to register his company last year but he is still working from home.

Consolation admits that being a designer comes with its challenges, such as making his clients understand why his designs cost more than the clothes in the retail stores.

“Many individuals can’t afford to wear designer clothes. I try to make them understand why my clothes cost more by showing them all the materials I need to buy, and telling them about all the time and effort I put into it.

“I am happy with my achievements so far and Derby’ora has been worn by some local celebrities, from radio personalities to musicians, when they attend events,” he says proudly.

“Fashion design is definitely a tough and competitive field but it is also very creative and exciting. I encourage people to explore if they are passionate about it. My wish for Derby’ora is that it will compete with other big brands.”
