POLOKWANE – Starting his music career in 2014, Johnnyboy Mahwayi has released two albums with a song on each album being nominated for the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma Awards).

Best known for his stage name, Why Mahwayi, he started out in his music career as a poet and praise singer. He was inspired by the late legendary singer, April Ramufhi, to pursue a career as a musician after he had long lost hope in making his love of poetry and praise singing into a full-time craft.

Asked what it means for him to be nominated for the Satma Awards, he said he feels excited and encouraged by the love and acknowledgement he gets for his passion.

His first album, Khombo, was released in 2014 and it received massive airplay from major national and local radio stations including Phalaphala FM, Munghana Lonene FM and Makhado FM.

He enjoys performing as he feels his praise poetry is informative and educational and through his performances he aims to remind Africans about their heritage and instill pride in the knowledge of their history.

Why Mahwayi’s latest album is called Mahosi a Venda, which is a special dedication to the former and current tribal chiefs of the Vha-Venda people. He brings attention to their achievements, visions and developments.

He is grateful for the support and adoration he receives from his fans and the community and he is confident they will continue to show their support by voting for him for the Satma Awards so he can bring the awards home to the people of Limpopo.
