Local gospel sensation is singing her way to the top

Moniccah Mogashu began singing professionally in 2015 and says her music journey to date has been fun and rewarding.

POLOKWANE – Moniccah Mogashu, from Seshego Zone 8 said that she began singing alongside a local brass band at the age of seven. “I enjoyed singing so much, and it made me stand out among my peers at school and at church. I only began singing professionally in 2015 as a back-up singer because I was still saving money to record my own album. It is difficult to start from the bottom, but the journey is fun and rewarding,” she explained.

Monicah has grown musically since collaborating with other local musicians and producers. “Now I am a lead singer for one of the country’s most influential gospel music groups, Worship House. It is both overwhelming and exciting to be part of such a prominent and popular music group and I have learned and grown so much and really harnessed my craft. I was taught how to create great and powerful music, which will not only inspire people to be hopeful, but also help mend them in the process,” she explained. Monicah also stresses how important it is for musicians to learn about music production, public relations for marketing purposes as well as networking.

Since joining Worship House in 2020, Moniccah has released a 10-track album, ‘My Living Testimony’, as well as a single, ‘Seemo’, which she wrote herself and she drew inspiration from personal challenges she has overcome. Monicah says she looks up to gospel legends, Zaza and Hlengiwe Mhlaba.

“Although Covid-19 has affected many of us negatively, especially financially, it has given me an opportunity for self-examination, and to work on my singing as well.

I have done research on how to be a music writer, composer and producer and I look forward to growing as a musician and sharing my knowledge and skills with those who are looking to venture into the music industry,” she concluded.
