Some areas of the city and surrounds have been facing low pressure and water shortages since earlier this morning (Monday) as result of a burst pipe on the Specon pipe line from the Olifantspoort water plant. The situation is compounded by critically low reservoir levels, attributed to increased consumption due to high temperatures.
Communications and Marketing Manager of Polokwane Municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo said in a media release earlier this morning that the Seshego reservoir had dropped from 43% to 5% within a four day period. The three reservoirs on Krugersburg that supply residential areas dropped from an average of 18% to 0% within the same period.
“In order to restore and stabilise the reservoir levels, the public is advised to use water sparingly despite the high temperatures currently experienced. The municipality is deploying tankers to the affected areas as it is expected that it will take a while before the situation will improve,” Mothapo said but could not say when water supply would be totally restored in all areas.
The municipality’s water helpline may be contacted on 015 290 2376 or 015 290 2629 to summon water tankers.
