Cultural day educates youth about their true identities

Different cultural dance groups in Moletjie proved that they still adhere to their tradition and heritage when they performed at the first annual Mmotong Heritage Day celebration at Ranoto Callies Sport Grounds on Saturday.
The crowd was entertained by traditional dance groups, local musicians and dancers. Event organiser, Phineas Kgoana said the idea to host the celebration came about a month ago and they were excited with the attendance. He said they wanted to remind youth about their heritage in order for them to keep their true identity and added that they also aim to educate people about their culture.
Kgoana emphasised that Pedi people used to farm and help one another but this was not happening anymore. “We have lost our true identity hence the gathering will educate youth about who we really are. We also want to groom young people into future leaders who don’t abuse harmful substances,” he explained, adding that the day was made successful by sponsors, Kgoshi Kgabo Moloto III, residents, dance groups and other invited guests such as Provincial Government spokesperson Phuti Seloba.
When addressing the audience Seloba said it was important to celebrate Heritage Month to teach children about their roots. He said one of the basics is to know who you really are. “We have to encourage children to avoid indulging in stuff that will harm their future and they should not undermine themselves. I challenged Moloto to ensure that the gathering becomes an annual celebration and I was excited when he highlighted that they will host it annually and that the royal house hosts the annual Heritage Day celebration in Ga-Matamanyane,” Seloba stated.
He concluded by saying it was profound for parents and elders in the society to teach children to look after themselves.
