A truck load of water that was collected by the community of the city and some other areas in the province, was dispatched to Cape Town on Friday.
The project was an initiative of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the water was loaded into a truck provided by Gift of the Givers at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium.
“We are overwhelmed by the enormous reaction to our call to residents, schools and the business community of the city. We have even received a contribution from as far as Hoedspruit and the staff of the DA office in the city worked very hard to make this project a success,” DA Polokwane ward councillor, Mariëtte Pretorius, who coordinated the project on behalf of the party, said and added that some of the water will be provided to rural areas around the Mother City.
“We preferred commercially bottled water, but also accepted water from boreholes and the municipal supply system that will be used for animals,” Pretorius explained.
DA Provincial Leader, Jacques Smalle assisted with the loading of the water and said that although the water is only a drop in the ocean, it will still make a difference. “Smalle reiterated that the authorities should pursue sustainable solutions or interventions for the water crisis in the whole of the country. “Infrastructure should be upgraded and prompt attention be given to water losses caused by leaking water pipes and faulty equipment. More storage capacity should be created to retain water that are available,” Smalle said.
