LEANDRA – Bloody water was flowing in the streets of Leandra small farmers area on Thursday, 11 September.

This was as a result of a blocked sewer manhole.

Residents suspect the sewage is mixed with blood that comes from a nearby butcher, and they said the situation and the stench are unbearable.

Mr Elijah Mbonani, a farmer, said this is totally unacceptable and against human rights.

“Nobody should live in such a state.

“It contaminates the soil and our plants die.

“We ask the municipality to help us.”

Farmers also said the sewage leaks in the municipality are so severe that they have affected three water sources, namely the Grootbrak River in Evander and eMbalenhle, the Waterval River in Leandra and Lebogang and Blesbokspruit in Bethal and eMzinoni.

The newspapers is waiting for a comment from the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
