Teen girl in Evander Magistrate’s Court for stab death of 14-year-old

The attack was allegedly in retaliation to a clash about a boy.

A 16-year-old girl from eMbalenhle made her second appearance in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (August 20) in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old eMbalenhle girl.

The victim, Unathi Matshobane, died after she was allegedly stabbed in the left shoulder at Ext 22 in eMbalenhle on August 14.

According to eMbalenhle police spokesperson Sergeant Busi Mthethwa, Unathi and a friend allegedly confronted another girl that night, accusing her of stealing Unathi’s boyfriend.

The confrontation turned violent, but the girl managed to escape. Mthethwa said the girl later returned with the 16-year-old suspect to confront Unathi and her friend.

Unathi was allegedly stabbed in the left shoulder with a knife before the assailants fled the scene. Police were called to Paulinah Morapedi Clinic in Ext 19 at about 22:40, where they found the deceased.

Following a preliminary investigation, the 16-year-old girl was arrested that same night in connection with the murder.

She is being held at a youth facility in Hendrina while the police investigation continues. The girl’s name has been withheld because she is a minor.
